Jeremiah
1:4-10
This summer we will
follow the people of Israel from security to exile. And we will learn
from those who live in exile and then as they move toward home. Using
the passages of Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Second Isaiah we will be asked
to parallel how the church can make the same journey. Are we ready
to be led by God and can we see the big picture of that leading that
make take us from our past to the future?
From the Minister
My mother got
home the day I arrived. Her goal was simple: get back to normal. There
is a need for most of us to do just that, especially after significant
change whether health related or some other change thrust upon us.
And even changes we choose like moving to a new place includes the
desire to restore order to our lives. This is part of our stability
that often gives us time to set deep roots and grow. But there is
another side to this desire for stability, that leans so hard into
finding it, that we find it difficult to change. We become set in
our ways and in groups, tends to keep things the same. We call it
the status quo and many of us, when called to lead, were entrusted
with the task of keeping things the same for the most part. Part of
the strength of the church is the unchangeable nature of our belief
that God will not change, nor turn from us. But there have been many
times when that same God called us to do just that. The Exodus is
a call to freedom and a call to greater promise. Those who feared
such, probably stayed in Egypt. Many started the trip and then became
obstacles to the faith of others by questioning those leading and
even God. The reward of promises fulfilled could not have been fulfilled
if they had stayed in Egypt. As we look at where we are as a congregation
this Summer, some will see this as an exciting brochure of possibilities
and others will become anxious about possible changes and who is leading
them. We will need reassurance and inspiration to follow God’s
leading. Didn’t Jesus say: do not be anxious? If it were only
that easy.
